    The Ontario College of Teachers licenses, governs and regulates Ontario’s teaching profession in the public interest. It was created by the Ontario College of Teachers Act to:

    • issue, suspend and revoke teaching certificates
    • set ethical standards and standards of practice
    • investigate and hear complaints about members
    • accredit teacher education programs and courses.

    All public school teachers and administrators in Ontario must be certified by us and be members of the College.

    The Role

    You are a forward-thinking, technologically-savvy professional with a deep understanding of professional discipline hearings and a strong interest in modernizing legal processes. In this role, you will develop the College’s capacity to hold a high volume of remote or electronic legal proceedings in English and French. You will also facilitate remote or electronic legal proceedings and troubleshoot any technological issues as they arise. You have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to clearly and professionally communicate with various stakeholders. You are detail-oriented and able to track and monitor hearings-related data in order to continually find efficiencies that will help the College to advance its public interest mandate.

    Primary duties
    DEVELOP ELECTRONIC HEARINGS CAPACITY
    • Build capacity to conduct a high volume of remote or electronic legal proceedings (including pre-hearing conferences, motions and hearings), and paperless in-person hearings in English and French.
    • Develop electronic storage solutions for hearings-related materials.
    • Develop and maintain hearings-related procedures, user guides, and other materials related to remote or electronic legal proceedings.
    • Provide leadership, guidance, support and training to Tribunals staff regarding remote or electronic legal proceedings.
    • Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Tribunals manager.
    FACILITATE REMOTE OR ELECTRONIC LEGAL PROCEEDINGS
    • Provide technological training and support to hearings participants with respect to remote or electronic legal proceedings.
    • Attend and moderate remote or electronic legal proceedings, and troubleshoot any technological issues as needed.
    • Provide decision-writing support to Committee members in uncontested electronic hearings, as needed.
    • Provide administrative support in the preparation or closing of hearings files, as needed.
    • Oversee the distribution of materials to prosecution and defence counsel, and to Committee members in remote or electronic legal proceedings.
    • Anticipate potential hearings-related issues and proactively address them to ensure the proper functioning of hearings process.
    STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS
    • Communicate technological hearings requirements clearly and professionally with various stakeholders including IT professionals, Discipline and Fitness to Practise Committee members, legal counsel, court reporters, members of the teaching profession and the public.
    • Respond to internal or public inquiries, as needed, relating to remote or electronic legal proceedings.
    BUDGETING, REPORTING AND RISK-MANAGEMENT
    • Track and monitor data related to the conduct of remote or electronic legal proceedings and report budgetary or other implications to the Tribunals manager.
    • Consult with department leadership regarding issues related to remote or electronic legal proceedings and ensure that any potential risks are recognized and minimized.
    • Maintain thorough record of hearings-related materials, including by using computer tracking system to store electronic materials, communications and actions related to all remote or electronic hearings files.
    Skills and Qualifications
    • Demonstrated experience working for a regulatory body in a legal setting, and supporting the work of committees or administrative tribunals.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Excellent IT skills, including advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, videoconferencing technology (e.g. GoToMeeting, Zoom), meeting management software (e.g. eScribe) and File Sharing technology (e.g. ShareFile).
    • Strong problem-solving abilities.
    • Ability to effectively handle sensitive and complex issues and to maintain calm and composed demeanor in a fast-paced legal environment.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills – a team player who demonstrates a collaborative approach and supports team decisions.
    • Oral and written French proficiency is an asset.
