The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) is the independent regulator of offshore oil and gas activity off the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the federal and provincial governments. Created in 1986 through the Atlantic Accord and its implementing legislation, the C-NLOPB provides regulatory oversight of operator activities in the areas of health and safety, environmental protection, resource management and Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador benefits.
The C-NLOPB invites applications for the position of Legal Counsel. This position will work under the direction and supervision of the General Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel. The Legal Counsel will provide legal advice related to statutory matters respecting the Atlantic Accord regime, operational matters, access to information and privacy, drafting and/or review of legal documents and agreements, and other advice as required.
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Law and be eligible for membership or is an active member in good standing with the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. Qualified candidates have at least seven years’ experience of legal practice evidencing strong litigation, analytical and negotiation skills. Experience in administrative, labour/employment and oil and gas law, as well as experience with public sector organizations in-house or as clients is required. Experience working on or providing advice to a Board would be considered an asset.
The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal and networking skills that will promote positive relationships with C-NLOPB Board members, all levels of staff, and external stakeholders including governments and industry. Superior verbal and written communication skills are essential for this position. Candidates must have the ability to work independently. Knowledge of MS office suite is required. Proficiency in speaking French would be considered an asset.
