The Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) serves as the professional regulatory body for the profession of social work in Alberta. Its regulatory obligations are legislated under the Health Professions Act (HPA) that has requirements for mandatory registration, continuing competency, the practice of restricted activities, and a specialty register for clinical social workers. The ACSW supports continuing competency activities for its membership such as an annual conference and regional events that promote skilled and ethical social work practice. To complement its legislated obligations, the ACSW advocates for policies, programs and services that serve the interests of public protection, thus involving communication with government ministries as well as establishing and maintaining relationships with numerous external organizations (Provincial, National and International).
The ACSW also represents the social work profession in Alberta and its 8000+ members in addressing policy and practice matters that affect professional interests such as Indigenous social work, children’s issues, gerontology, health, private practice, social action/social justice and international social work.
The ACSW is governed by a Council comprised of ten members elected by its membership, four public members appointed by the government, and the chair of the Indigenous Social Work Committee. The ACSW maintains an office in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Registrar & Executive Director (RED) is an Ex-Officio member and accountable to the Council of the ACSW for enacting the vision and strategy of the Council and for ensuring the organization upholds the regulatory standards set by the HPA, thrives through responsible financial management, efficient management of operations, setting and achieving operational goals. These responsibilities are intended to support the success of the mission and strategic directions of the ACSW and to assist in positioning the ACSW as a recognized leader in the field of social work and regulated health professions. Major duties involve adeptly leading the ACSW staff, providing support to Council legislated governance activities, overseeing professional regulation & public protection, driving membership engagement and advocacy initiatives, and ensuring strong relationships with diverse stakeholders including the public, members, Indigenous communities and government.
Strategic Leadership & Governance Support
- Transparently, proactively and frequently communicate with the President, Executive Committee and Council on ACSW matters, but with a particular emphasis on those matters related to governance and risk;
- Provide strategic input and guidance and participates in planning, development and implementation of Council’s directions and priorities;
- In conjunction with the President, prepare Council and Executive Committee agendas and supporting information for regular and ad hoc meetings as required;
- As an ex-officio member of Council, actively participate in Council meetings;
- Oversee and facilitate support of Council through activities such as new member orientation, and planning of Council meetings & retreats; and
- Coordinate, develop, compile, and update Council policies and procedures.
Registrar Regulatory Leadership
- Ensure that legislated regulatory requirements are in place and upheld (new registrations, renewals, continuing competency, complaints & discipline);
- Oversee development and dissemination of information regarding regulatory requirements, standards of practice, and the CASW Code of Ethics (2005) to existing and potential members, stakeholders and the public;
- Ensure success of regulatory committees through appropriate resourcing efforts and new member orientation; and
- Champion frequent and timely communication regarding regulatory matters between Council and regulatory committees.
Executive Director Social Work Profession & Advocacy Leadership
- Champion a high level of membership engagement through regular communication and opportunities for membership participation;
- Lead the ongoing development, coordination and implementation of membership programs and activities that result in a high level of member satisfaction; and
- With direction from Council, lead the content development and implementation of advocacy activities.
Registrar-Executive Director Stakeholder Relationships
- Proactively build strong and trusted relationships with all key stakeholders, including Council, members, staff, the public, Indigenous communities, all levels of government and other professional bodies;
- Champion the development and execution of a strategic communications plan encompassing communications with members, stakeholders, the public and media;
- Regularly liaise and consult with relevant provincial government ministries;
- Seek opportunities to participate in activities that could impact the ACSW and the profession of social work including forums, consultations, regulatory and policy reviews, etc.;
- Regularly liaise and consult with relevant local, provincial, national and international organizations including the provincial social work regulatory bodies and associations;
- Regularly liaise and consult with other external stakeholders including post-secondary institutions, unions, community groups, etc.; and
- Act as an ambassador for ACSW and the profession at external events and activities.
Executive Director Operational Leadership
- Provide or facilitate overall administration of the ACSW office and business functions including member services, committee and task group support, internal and external communication, human resource management, finance and accounting, records management, policies and procedures;
- Develops the ACSW budget in conjunction with the Council Treasurer for approval by the ACSW Council;
- Communicate regularly and transparently with the Treasurer and Finance Committee on financial matters;
- Implement appropriate expenditure, monitoring and reporting mechanisms; and
- Initiate and monitor the annual audit process.
Executive Director People Leadership
- Champion a culture of empowerment, inclusion, collaboration and trust;
- Provide leadership and overall direction to the ACSW staff, including staff development and training;
- Ensure that the ACSW has an effective team in place, and that there exists an effective plan of succession and development for the RED and management;
- Encourage idea sharing and an effective system of communication among the ACSW staff, with a non-siloed, one-ACSW approach;
- Continually enhance the work environment through innovative administrative practices and human resources programs and policies; and
- Inspire and motivate the team in developing operating objectives, administrative policies, and business plans to meet the strategic goals and objectives as defined by Council.
Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:
- Fully understand all aspects of the organization including the regulatory and social work profession mandate of the ACSW, the mult-isector stakeholder landscape, the relationships within and between staff and Council and the day to day operational flow;
- Establish relationships and be seen as a trusted officer and advisor to the staff, Council, membership, government, public and the other social work bodies;
- Develop and operationalize a strategy to more actively recruit staff using a diversity, equity and inclusion lens, and in order to model commitment and excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion for the entire profession;
- Effect a positive, respectful, thriving internal culture of ACSW that is evidenced by a trusting, communicative and empowering work environment;
- Enhance the relationship between the ACSW and Indigenous groups and ensure a positive trajectory for building trust and engagement; and
- Work with Council to develop a strategic plan and subsequently, operational plans.
The successful candidate will have the following:
- A minimum of one accredited Social Work degree;
- Eligibility to be registered as a member of the ACSW, or a member in good standing within their current regulatory body; and
- Graduate level education preferred.
- Front-line social work experience, with a preference given to those candidates with a wide breadth of experience in social work delivery;
- Executive leadership experience, with a preference for candidates who have had responsibility for operational, financial, administrative and strategic leadership within an organization of similar scope, scale and complexity;
- Working knowledge or experience within a regulatory body strongly preferred; and
- Prior experience reporting to a Board or Council, or strong governance experience garnered through Board/Council participation, is strongly preferred.
